RANDOM RANTINGS - 2013

Good morning!  A recent Miami tragedy rubbed me the wrong way. It happened because the adult didn't use common sense and avoided safety measures meant to prevent a tragedy. It got me thinking about "The Bell Curve" - Intelligence Quotient of the races.

A grandmother walked her 6 year old granddaughter to school. While crossing the street, both pedestrians were struck by a car. The child died, the grandmother is hospitalized with broken bones. Horrible.

Miami TV reporters interviewed locals where the accident occurred. Suggestions included adding speed bumps, slowing traffic, etc.

The white elephant in this tragedy is this grandmother put her granddaughter and herself in jeopardy when she chose to dodge traffic instead of crossing at the traffic light crosswalk!  (We've seen this many times on Oakland Park Blvd where pedestrians weave through traffic to avoid walking 25' to a crosswalk.)

So, I started to wonder WHY this happened. Why wasn't the grandmother teaching her six-year-old granddaughter how to properly cross the street? Why wasn't she setting a good example?

For years I've worried about declining intelligence overall; as evidenced in the daily news. Why do people make the same mistakes over and over again? What happened to taking responsibility for your own welfare/bad judgement?  Old research showed a 15 - 18 percent lower IQ of black versus white intelligence. Education is the same for both races since desegregation in 1960's America. What is the cause of dumbing down of society?

University studies cite the emergence of crack cocaine as a cause of high school dropout. Drug dealers recruited and provided a lucrative source of income to teens. Although this idea undoubtedly has merit, one style of education obviously does not fit all.

Now, to be fair, I will cite example of poor judgement by well-educated, well-traveled friends. This couple, who we've known 25 years, are unable to make a decision. They seek advice, seemingly digest it, but remain stuck. They feel friends have been "lucky" with good choices, but cannot act themselves.  This affliction may be worse than low IQ.

What's your opinion?
