FRIDAY THE 13TH, 2013 ... YIKES

Double 13s ...
friggatriskaidekaphobics beware ...

12 days till Christmas!  Good Friday morning y'all. It's a chilly 62° this morning at our house and Mark is in the woods enjoying it!!! Actually, Mark looked like he did a round with Mohamed Ali ... allow me to explain.

Last night's Yaya's meeting was lots of fun!  At the end of the evening, we exchanged cookies and each took assorted cookies home. Mark, and friend Lew, had enjoyed an evening of wine, venison chili and hunting shows. Mark wanted a cookie, but said "I'd better not take a chance!". I said, "Anita made chocolate chip, you can eat those!".

A few minutes after scarfing the chocolate chip cookies, Mark felt terrible!!! Apparently, the cookie contained NUTS!!! I suggested a Benadryl right away but he was upset and ignored my (sound) advice. Instead, he stomped off to bed at 9:30. When I went to bed at midnight, he was sleeping soundly. About 2:30 he got up and looked for the Benadryl. It was 5 hours too late!  Mark looked in the bathroom mirror and said, "I'm hideous!"

Well you know how it is ... I said, "Turn on the bedside light; let me see!"  Well, one eye was swollen shut and his face red blotches. I suggested he sleep in the recliner to reduce facial swelling (he'd just taken two Benadryl), "No way" he said, "I'm staying right here to keep you awake all night!!!"  LOL. It's true that misery loves company. Anyway, he said his "sighting eye" wasn't swollen ... and went hunting at 5 o'clock.

So, back to my story of Friday the 13th.
Friday is considered an unlucky day because Jesus died on a Friday; and 13 is just plain unlucky. Seriously, I looked this up on the Internet!

Don't open an umbrella inside ... you'll poke someone's eye out. Heehee

Cross your fingers for luck. Maybe this dates back to early Christianity and making the sign of the cross for protection?

Wishbones pulled for luck date back to the days of Romans. Pieces of bird bones were used in divination throughout history.

Knock on wood wards off bad spells after we tempt fate. This may date back to the good spirits in trees. (Well, okay then but it wasn't good luck for the tree that made the table you're knocking on!)

666 refers to the Book of Revelation in the Bible; the sign of the beast. But why 666?

Break a mirror, 7 years of bad luck? This belief began when people thought that a mirror didn't just reflect their image but held bits of your soul.

Bad luck comes in threes?  This is confirmation bias at its best. Ha, I think not. You just know that if your dishwasher breaks down, your clothes washer and refrigerator are next in line!

A rabbit's foot as good luck charm? Many talismans and amulets are used to fend off evil. A rabbit's foot harkens back to Celtic tribes in England.

Is it bad luck to have a black cat cross your path?  Cats have been pets for thousands of years. Witches were said to take the form of their domestic pets. Who knew?

Don't walk under a ladder!  This makes good sense; a bucket of paint could fall on your head! Christian Holy Trinity is created by a ladder leaning against a wall. Walking "through it" would be blasphemous.

Find a penny, pick it up; and all day long you'll have good luck. Certainly finding money is indeed good luck. So, on this Friday the 13th, look for a lucky penny and pick it up!!!
